Tra i feudi in Val Curone dei conti di Lavagna, assai antico era quello della famiglia Abagnaro poco distante da Varzi i cui signori, abbandonando il predicato di Lavagna assunsero quello del luogo; erano pure consignori di Castelnuovo allora compreso nei territori dei marchesi Obertenghi della marca ligure orientale; i Malaspina affini, e di agnazione comune Supponide, ai Lavagna con i quali furono ovunque in rapporti di comune interesse. Facevano parte del Comitato di Tortona ed ecclesiasticamente soggetta al Vescovo Oberto del ramo viscontile dei signori di Montemarzino il quale, dopo la distruzione della città nel 1155 ed alle conseguenti confische operate da Federico Barbarossa si recò a Roma per chiedere a Papa Adriano IV, che già nel 1154 l'aveva elevato alla cattedra episcopale tortonese, di voler porre sotto la protezione di S. Pietro i possessi della sua Chiesa; il pontefice aderì con breve di conferma del 13 aprile
