La generalidad de los autores que mencionan este apellido se concretan a decir que es lo mismo que Abaeto, Abaito, Abasto o Abastras. Sin embargo, Barahona y Gracia Dei, alejándose de esa creencia, dicen que esta linaje de A. desciende en derechura del linaje de Haro, de esta manera: Don Lope Días fué hijo ilegítimo de D. Lope Díaz de Haro, hijo legítimo de D. Diego Lope de Haro, Señor de Vizcaya. Ese D. Lope Díaz, bastardo, tuvo un hijo que se llamó don Fernando, el cual fundó la casa solar de A. en San Pedro. Don Fernando tuvo solamente una hija, y ésta casó con don Sancho Pérez de Fresneda, hijo de D. Pero García, hijo mayor a su vez del Señor de Ayala, y de ese matrimonio nacieron una hija y un hijo, de los que descienden los A., que fué siempre linaje noble. Otra casa muy antigua. Este linaje proviene ilegítimamente de la gran Casa de los Señores de Vizcaya.
