Antica e nobile famiglia originaria del napoletano (Ducato di Napoli), "provincia bizantina, retta da un dux, nel 638 fu dipendente del governatore della Sicilia e in seguito governata direttamente dall'imperatore. Il duca-vescovo Stefano II fu il primo dei duchi elettivi che si succedettero per circa un secolo, seguiti dai duchi ereditari. Oltre a Napoli, il ducato comprendeva Pozzuoli, Cuma, Sorrento e la Terra del Lavoro.
