Antica e nobile famiglia originaria di Nizza, la famiglia partecipò all'accordo stipulato a Nizza tra Francesco I re di Francia e l'imperatore Carlo V, nel 1538. Carlo V, re di Spagna, Napoli e Sicilia, principe dei Paesi Bassi (Gand 1500-San Jèromine de Yuste 1558); figlio dell'arciduca d'Austria Filippo il Bello d'Absburgo e di Giovanna la Pazza, figlia di Ferdinando il Cattolico, ereditò da questa i diritti sulla corona di Spagna. Nel 1516 divenne re di Spagna (col nome di Carlo I), di Sardegna, Sicilia e Napoli. Fin dal 1506 aveva ereditato la signoria dei Paesi Bassi. Nel 1519 ereditò dal padre i domini della Casa d'Austria e il titolo di re di Germania e dei Romani.
