Ancient and noble house of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, with family branches spread across various regions of Italy and the world, known as Abbate or dell'Abate. According to the famous seventeenth-century Sicilian historian and genealogist Filadelfo Mugnos, this family took its surname from a Papyrus, a Roman knight, who retired to the monastery of Montecassino in the twelfth century, later becoming its abbot. When his only son, Ascanio, died, he laid down the cassock and married; the children born of that marriage were called dell'Abate or Abbate. What is certain is that the family settled in Sicily following Frederick II of Aragon in 1299 and in fact the Abbates are already known at the time of the Sicilian Vespers in Palermo, with a Palmerio Abbate, companion of Giovanni da Procida. This family has owned numerous fiefdoms, including: Favignana, Carini, Ghibellina, Ucria, Cefalù, Badia, Cudia. A Troiano, already baron
