Antigua y noble casa del Reino de las Dos Sicilias, con ramas familiares repartidas por varias regiones de Italia y del mundo, conocidas como Abbate o dell'Abate. Según el célebre historiador y genealogista siciliano del siglo XVII Filadelfo Mugnos, esta familia tomó su apellido de un papiro, un caballero romano, que se retiró al monasterio de Montecassino en el siglo XII, convirtiéndose más tarde en su abad. Cuando murió su único hijo, Ascanio, dejó la sotana y se casó; los hijos nacidos de ese matrimonio se llamaban dell'Abate o Abbate. Lo cierto es que la familia se instaló en Sicilia siguiendo a Federico II de Aragón en 1299 y de hecho los Abbates ya son conocidos en la época de las Vísperas Sicilianas en Palermo, con un Palmerio Abbate, compañero de Giovanni da Procida.
