Oriunda da Brescia (anche se si presume originaria di Pistoia) , si stabilì verso la fine del XIV secolo nella città di Pesaro. Antonio segretario di Galeazzo Malatesta (Malatesta, famiglia feudale guelfa, già nota nel VII sec. Ebbe la signoria di Rimini tra il 1200 e il 1500. Tra i membri più noti, Malatesta II (m. 1312), il quale riuscì a conquistare l'intera Romagna insieme ai figli Gianciotto (m. 1304) e Malatestino (m. 1317); Gianciotto, detto "lo Sciancato", nel 1283-84 uccise la moglie Francesca da Polenta e il proprio fratello Paolo, colpevoli di adulterio; l'episodio è ricordato da Dante (Inf., V, 73 e segg.); Sigismondo Pandolfo (1417-1468), signore di Fano, Rimini e Senigallia, fu sconfitto nel 1463 dalle milizie di papa Pio II e di Francesco Sforza, perdendo tutti i possedimenti, eccetto Rimini; nel 1464 combattè contro i Turchi in Morea.
