Oriunda da Brescia (embora se presume ser de Pistoia), estabeleceu-se no final do século XIV na cidade de Pesaro. Antonio secretário de Galeazzo Malatesta (Malatesta, família feudal de Guelph, já conhecida no século VII. Ele tinha o domínio de Rimini entre 1200 e 1500. Entre os membros mais conhecidos, Malatesta II (m. 1312), que conseguiu conquistar o Romagna, juntamente com seus filhos Gianciotto (m. 1304) e Malatestino (m. 1317); Gianciotto, chamado "Lo Sciancato", em 1283-84, matou sua esposa Francesca da Polenta e seu irmão Paolo, culpado de adultério; Dante (Inf., V, 73 e segs.); Sigismondo Pandolfo (1417-1468), senhor de Fano, Rimini e Senigallia, foi derrotado em 1463 pelas milícias do papa Pio II e Francesco Sforza, perdendo todos os pertences, exceto Rimini; em 1464, ele lutou contra os turcos em Morea.
