Questa famiglia, gentiluomini di Ravenna e di Bagnocavallo, discendono da un condottiero, bulgaro vissuto all'epoca del papa Martino IV. A Bagnocavallo lasciarono innumerevoli memorie di uomini illustri. Un ramo di Ravenna si stabilì a Venezia ed acquistò facoltà considerevoli. Da questa gente uscì il medico Bortolo, che andò a nozze con Catterina Dragan Grifalconi e da cui nacque Agostino, medico della comunità di Belluno. Gli Abiosi in Venezia ebbero sepoltura nella demolita chiesa di S. Croce, che sorgeva dove oggidì si trova il giardino pubblico Papadopoli. Nel maggio del 1584 Ottavio, vescovo di Pistoia, si recò al Collegio, ed alla presenza del Doge Nicolò Da Ponte con parole molto impertinenti sostenne le ragioni del Granduca suo Signore. La Repubblica rispose con quella energica moderazione, che è propria dei Governi di forte sapere.
