Famiglia oriunda romagnola oggi estinta, dice il Savasta - Caso di Sciacca - Venne in Palermo sotto Ludovico d'Aragona; indi passò in Sciacca ove in fatto di partiti tennesi neutrale. Poscia uno degli A. al dir di Mugnos con truppe proprie nel 1344 in difesa del re prese in Messina il forte del Salvatore. Occupò distinte cariche; ed un Davide suo successore sotto Federico II -(1194-1250), figlio di Enrico VI e di Costanza di Altavilla. Dal 1196 fu re di Sicilia sotto la reggenza della madre e, dal 1198, sotto la tutela del papa Innocenzo III. Il papa lo sostenne contro Ottone di Brunswick per il trono di Germania, che ottenne il 9/12/1212, con l'obbligo di non unire le due corone di Germania e di Sicilia. Fu incoronato dal papa Onorio III imperatore, il 22/11/1220, con la promessa di guidare la crociata bandita nel IV concilio lateranense del 1215. F.
