Antica ed illustre famiglia, di origine spagnuola, che si recò in Sicilia verso la fine del XIII secolo. Un Ferraro ebbe in dono l'isola di Malta, ma ne fu scacciato da Federico II. I suoi figli ne furono compensati con i feudi di Giaesi e coln le castellanie di Agirò e di Raginelgi. Il Crollalanza nel suo "Dizionario Storico-Blasonico" e il Palizzolo Gravia nel suo "Il Blasone in Sicilia" riportano lo stemma di tal casato con le stelle di sei punte, anziché di cinque, come riportato dal Rietstap's nel suo Armorial Général, che noi qui abbiamo riprodotto. Lo scaglione in questo stemma è una pezza onorevole di primo ordine; molto è stato fantasticato su questa pezza araldica che troviamo negli stemmi di famiglie nobilissime.
