El linaje, según tradición, tuvo su origen en Italia, y de este país pasó a Francia y a España con los nombres de A., Abellas, Abello y Abelló, que, a pesar de sus variantes, tienen una misma procedencia. En España aparece, como hemos dicho, con muchísima antigüedad en las montañas de Asturias, en el concejo de Valdés, cuya capitalidad es la villa de Luarca. Esto lo confirma la Crónica de Asturias de Plinio, que dice que la familia A., que vino con los troyanos a España, fundó dos solares o torres fuertes en el Concejo de Valdés: uno en la villa de Luarca, que conservó la denominación de A., y otro en la villa de Orano, llamado después Torre de Brieves, que se denominó Abello. En estos dos puntos estuvieron los primitivos solares del linaje y de ellos salieron varias ramas, siendo muchos los hombres eminentes que ilustraron el apellido
