La famiglia era annoverata fra le primarie e più antiche di Arezzo nella riforma del 1518, godè da tempi antichissimi gli onori di questa città, compreso il gonfalonierato, carica alla quale erano ammessi soltanto i più nobili tra i cittadini. Da Matteo di Accolto nacquero Santi e Graia. I figli di Santi si trasferirono in Firenze, dove già avevano fissato la loro dimora, nel 1333, un altro della famiglia, il medico Ghirigoro "quomdam ser Acolti de Aretio"; e anche nella uova patria si elevarono ben presto a stato eminente. Appartiene a questi A. di Firenze Benedetto di Michele, giurista e professore di diritto, come il padre, e dal 1458 al 1464 cancelliere della Repubblica. Furono suoi figlioli Pietro, vescovo di Ancona nel 1505, e poi, nel 1511, cardinale: teologo insigne e consigliere di Clemente VII; Bernardo, abbreviatore a Roma e poeta estemporaneo, detto l'Unico Aretino, ebbe la Signoria di Nepis,
