La famiglia ebbe diramazioni a Roma, Firenze, Sicilia. Fu onorata in Danimarca del titolo di marchesi di Lister (22 aprile 1709). Fra i personaggi che primeggiarono ci fu Ottavio, vescovo di Fossombrone (1589), Giuseppe, cardinale, (1743). Fu celebre per bellezza, sventure e svegliatissimo ingegno Vittoria, sposa di Felice Peretti nipote di Sisto V, eppoi di Paolo Orsini. Si vuole che questa famiglia abbia origine comune con i Varano, principi di Camerino. Fu ricevuta negli ordini di Malta e di S. Giacomo di Spagna. Un ramo nel 1746 fu compreso in Roma fra i patrizi coscritti, che si estinse nel marchese Filippo, del quale furono eredi i Pepoli. Al ramo di Spello appartenne anche monsignor Agostino, arcivescovo di Eliopoli nel XVII secolo.
