Dérivé de l'ancienne et noble famille Aquino, il a pris le nom de Acerra du comté de ce nom, accordé par l'empereur Frédéric II à Thomas d'Aquin qui était vice-roi de tout le royaume de Naples. Un autre Tommaso, troisième comte de Acerra, avait pour épouse une sœur du roi Manfredi qui investit plusieurs fiefs en Terra di Lavoro et Terra d'Otranto. Adinolfo, quatrième et dernier comte de Acerra, tombé en disgrâce du roi Charles d'Anjou, fut fait mourir par lui en 1294, et tous ses biens, y compris le comté, furent confisqués.
