Un altro Tommaso, terzo conte di Acerra, ebbe per moglie una sorella di Re Manfredi che investì di parecchi feudi in Terra di Lavoro e in Terra d'Otranto. Adinolfo, quarto ed ultimo conte di Acerra, caduto in disgrazia di re Carlo d'Angiò, fu fatto da questo morire nel 1294, ed i suoi beni tutti, compresa la contea, furono confiscati. E' gran segno di nobiltà d'una famiglia il denominarsi col nome di quella città, terra, o castello, che per lunghissimo tempo signoreggiò; poiché da ciò s'argomenta la sua enorme potenza ed il suo prestigio, tale da acquisire il nome del luogo in possesso.
