Secondo la maggior parte degli autori, questa famiglia del regio sangue dei duchi di Baviera, passò in Italia nel sec. X, stabilendosi nella marca di Ancona. Al tempo degli Svevi scese nel Napoletano, acquistando un grosso stato negli Abruzzi, nel quale si comprende la terra di Acquaviva da cui trasse il nome. Per concessione di Ferdinando d'Aragona nel 1477 Giulio Antonio, duca di Atri, e i suoi discendenti, aggiunsero al proprio il cognome di Aragona. Fu annoverata insieme alla Sanseverino, d'Aquino, Ruffo, del Balzo, Piccolomini e Celano fra le sette grandi famiglie del regno. Fin dal 1373 fu ricevuta nell'ordine di Malta. Nel 1507 fu aggregata al patriziato di Napoli al seggio di Nido, e fu a suo tempo ascritta al Libro d'oro della nobiltà napoletana, per la qual cosa spetta il titolo di patrizio napoletano ai disc. maschi di Luigi di Girolamo e di Carlo di Girolamo.
