Dal Mugnos rileviamo essere stata una grande famiglia italiana; quella da cui ebbero origine un Anicia romana madre di consoli ed imperatori; e la famiglia Frangipane e Summucula che per lo stato di Aquino lasciò il cognome di Summucula. Il primo a passare in Sicilia sotto Federico II, quando fu incoronato a Palermo il 1296, non mancarono durante l'occupazione Aragonese le pretensioni della casa d'Angiò e le scomuniche del papa; anche un momento lo stesso Giacomo si mostrò disleale e nemico al fratello ed alla nazione, che l'aveva fedelmente servito. La lotta finì colla prigionia di Filippo d'Angiò, e colla vittoria delle armi siciliane, per cui ne venne la pace di Caltabellotta che chiudeva la guerra tra gli Angioini e gli Aragonesi.
