E' famiglia che deve la sua fortuna al traffico, alle imprese bancarie ed ha tradizioni civili anziché militari. Senza dar peso alle favolose origini riferite dal Campana, dal Fagnani e dal Marinoni si può asserire che la famiglia, usciti dalla popolazione indigena del contado milanese, erano già una potente casata brianzola di parte ghibellina prima che portassero la loro sede in Milano. Trascurando le minori diramazioni di Ginevra, di Savoia, di Francia e di Venezia si può ritenere la famiglia divisa in quattro linee milanesi. Il primo personaggio noto è un Luigi "de Abdua" vivente nel 1363, da cui discende per varie generazioni un Bartolino, padre fra gli altri, di Ferdinando (dec. 1567), ambasciatore ducale a Londra ed a Venezia, rettore magnifico dell'Università di Padova, uomo di squisita coltura, epigrafista insigne, un vero figlio della Rinascenza.
