E' famiglia che deve la sua fortuna al traffico, alle imprese bancarie ed ha tradizioni civili anziché militari. Senza dar peso alle favolose origini riferite dal Campana, dal Fagnani e dal Marinoni si può asserire che la famiglia, usciti dalla popolazione indigena del contado milanese, erano già una potente casata brianzola di parte ghibellina prima che portassero la loro sede in Milano.
