Originaria della Bulgaria, si trova stabilita in Ferrara fin dall'VIII secolo. Si divise in tre grandi linee, delle quali una passò a Rovigo, la seconda ad Ancona e la terza rimase in Ferrara, ove alcuni membri di essa appartennero al Magistrato dei 12 Savi. Un Marchesello o Marchesiello fu fatto Marchese della Marca Anconitana e lasciò il proprio nome a' suoi discendenti; un Guglielmo fu creato nel 795 Capitano supremo dei due castelli Cortesi ed Alto con la sopraintendenza generale della soldatesca di tutto lo stato. Ebbe la signoria di Ferrara e molti possedimenti nel Polesine e nella Marca di Ancona. Il ramo di Ferrara si estinse nella casa d'Este nella persona di Marchesella morta verso al fine del XII secolo; quello di Ancona prosperò per brevissimo tempo, e quello di Rovigo detto Bulgari si spense enl 1633 nella persona di Galeazzo che fu un assai gentile poeta. Altro ramo.
