Antica ed assai nobile famiglia del Regno delle Due Sicilie, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Secondo quanto è stato tramandato dal Mugnos, trattasi di una famiglia sveva portatasi in Sicilia al seguito dell'imperatore Enrico VI che, per i servizi resigli, conferì a Lanfranco Adinolfi il dominio su Catania. Il di lui figlio Giovanni fu creato scudiero maggiore dell'imperatore Federico II e forse è quello stesso Giovanni che nel maggio 1240 risulta incaricato delle riscossioni dei dazi in Terra di Lavoro e Molise e che nel 1283 figura tra i cavalieri di Monte San Giuliano. Nel 1294 un Tommaso Adinolfi è citato in qualità di "dominus". In data 29 gennaio 1517, un Mazzullo Adinolfo, nel nel nome maritale di Pina, figlia di Pietra Barbulato, fu investito del feudo di Formica. Sempre il genealogista Filadelfo Mugnos (Lentini, 1607 – Palermo, 28 maggio 1675),
