Eine alte schwäbische Familie von klarem und nachgewiesenem Adel, die, wie Mugnos gut berichtet, nach Kaiser Heinrich VI. Nach Sizilien überging. Andererseits ist der Ursprung dieses Familiennamens laut illustren Genealogen genau in dem altgermanischen mittelalterlichen Namen "Atenolfus" zu suchen, einer Variante des gebräuchlicheren "Adolfus", der sich wiederum aus den germanischen Begriffen " athala“ und „wulfa“, was „von edlem Stamm“ bzw. „Wolf“ bedeutet. Auf jeden Fall, immer nach dem, was Mugnos berichtet, erhielt ein Lanfranco Adinolfo für seine wertvollen Dienste vom oben genannten Kaiser die Obhut und Regierung der Stadt Catania. Sein Sohn Giovanni war ein Knappe des Kaisers Friedrich II. und wurde der Stammvater vieler tugendhafter und tapferer Barone; Daher rühmt sich diese Familie unter den alten Feudalherren Siziliens.
