Ancient Swabian family, of clear and proven nobility, which, as Mugnos well reports, passed to Sicily, following the emperor Henry VI. On the other hand, the origin of this surname, according to illustrious genealogists, should be sought precisely in the ancient Germanic medieval name "Atenolfus", a variant of the more common "Adolfus", composed, in turn, of the Germanic terms "athala" and "wulfa", meaning "of noble stock" and "wolf", respectively. In any case, always according to what Mugnos reports, a Lanfranco Adinolfo, for his precious services, obtained, from the aforementioned emperor, the custody and government of the city of Catania.
