Cette famille est l'une des plus anciennes et des plus remarquables de la cité mendoise. Elle apparaît, dès le XIII° siècle, à la tête de la bourgeoisie de cette ville, avec Robert, citoyen de Mende en 1228, et Raymond, official de l'évêque Etienne. Pierre, chevalier, fut l'un des témoins du mariage d'Odilon Guérin, seigneur du Tournel, avec Eléonore de Canillac, en 1305. Le même Etienne et son fils Pierre, en qualité d'héritiers de la famille Virgile, firent hommage au seigneur de Marchastel en 1307. Au XV° siècle, cette famille connurent des fortunes diverses. Les uns continuèrent de se qualifier chevalierrs, les autres devinrent notaires et marchands. A chaque génération ils furent revêtus des honneurs consulaires. En 1400, Pierre fut nommé chanoine de la cathédrale, par résignation expresse du roi Charles VI, chanoine d'honneur, en récompense des services rendus par ledit Pierre à la Couronne. En 1418 Bertrand fut nommé archidiacre de la cathédrale. En 1469 François, dit fresquet, était panetier du roi. Au XVI° siècle cette famille se distingua par des plusieurs et inteligentes fondations.
