Famille très ancienne et noble, ornée des titres de comtes du Royaume d'Italie, de comtes palatins du Grand-Duché de Toscane et de nobles patriciens de la République maritime de Pise. Sur la base de ce qu'affirme Goro Stendardi, dans l'un de ses essais bien connus sur les anciennes familles patriciennes pisanes, et sur ce que Mugnos et Inveges s'accordent, nous pouvons affirmer que la branche originelle de la famille, bien que certains le veuillent en Vénétie, est une natif de Pise , au patriciat duquel il est attribué depuis le XIIe siècle. En effet, c'est à partir de cette souche originelle qu'auraient été générées les familles Agostino et Augustini, transplantées respectivement à Palerme et à Sienne, dans la première moitié du XVIe siècle, ou après la seconde conquête florentine de Pise, qui eut lieu en 1509.
