Antichissimo e nobile casato, fregiato dei titoli di conti del Regno d'Italia, conti palatini del Granducato di Toscana e nobili patrizi della Repubblica Marinara di Pisa. Sulla base di quanto afferma Goro Stendardi, in un suo noto saggio sulle antiche famiglie patrizie pisane, e di quanto concordano il Mugnos e l'Inveges, possiamo affermare che il ramo originario del casato, benché alcuni lo vogliano in Veneto, sia nativo di Pisa, al cui patriziato trovasi ascritto sin dal XII secolo. Proprio da tal ceppo originario, infatti, si sarebbero generate le famiglia d'Agostino e Augustini, trapiantatesi, rispettivamente, in Palermo ed in Siena, nella prima metà del XVI secolo, ovvero dopo la II° conquista fiorentina di Pisa, avvenuta nel 1509. Il ramo siciliano si originò da Francesco, figlio naturale di Paulus Antonii Nannis, e godette nobiltà in Palermo, Messina e Girgenti, alzando per arma: d'azzurro, a tre fascie d'oro, accompagnate da sei vasetti dello
