Aggregata nel 1466 alla nobiltà di Bologna, fu elevata alla dignità comitale dal Pontefice Paolo III nella persona di Girolamo celebre giureconsulto che fu professore in quella pontificia università. Un ramo di questa famiglia trapiantata nel 1659 in Dalmazia da un Carlo Grati fiorisce tuttora nella città di Cattaro. Questa famiglia Grati, prima detta Ingrati, si ritiene venisse anticamente da Castel de' Britti, e si sà le fosse originaria di quel castello pure ivi si ricoverasse per le Guerre Civili, appresso la famiglia detta Castel de' Britti, che n'era patrona come sua congiunta, portava questa per insegne un Castel rosso, a guisa di quello sopra sei monti verdi, in campo d'argento, con i gigli sopra; possiede il grado Senatorio, e si è presa molto riguardevole, dopo aver lasciato il primo cognome.
