Este apellido es de origen gallego. Procede del lugar de su nombre, a tres leguas de Lugo, hacia Mondoñedo. Tiene por tronco a un caballero mozárabe de Toledo llamado Men Gómez Ibáñez, que tuvo un hijo, el Conde Don Gueda Bello "el Viejo", que pasó a Portugal, sirviendo al Conde Don Enrique, quien en premio a sus servicios, le dió el Señorío de A., en tierras lusitanas; sus nietos pasaron a Galicia, fundando la casa solariega en el lugar que desde entonces fue conocido por San Lorenzo de A. Otras ramas se extendieron por Asturias y León. Juan Fernández de A. y Cordero, natural de Ponte de Lima en Portugal, era vecino de la isla de la Palma, a principios del siglo XVI.
