Família espanhola antiga e muito nobre, originária da Galiza. Vem do lugar de seu nome, três léguas de Lugo, em direção a Mondoñedo. Tem como porta-malas um cavalheiro moçárabe de Toledo, chamado Men Gómez Ibáñez, que teve um filho, o conde Don Gueda Bello "el Viejo", que foi a Portugal, servindo ao conde Don Enrique, que em recompensa por seus serviços, deu-lhe o Señorío de Aguiar, em terras lusitanas; seus netos foram para a Galiza, fundando a mansão no local que desde então era conhecido por San Lorenzo de Aguiar. Outros ramos abrangiam Astúrias e Leão. Juan Fernández de Aguiar e Cordero, natural de Ponte de Lima, em Portugal, era vizinho da ilha de La Palma no início do século XVI. Ele era casado com Dona Catalina Álvarez Cordero, com quem era pai de Dona Esperança Fernández de Aguiar e Cordero, que se casou com Don Tomás Van de Walle
