De origem germânica, foi transplantada para a Itália pelo cavaleiro Agussello conde Anguisciola, que havia sido chamado pelo cardeal Albornoz, legado de Inocêncio VI, e pouco depois se estabeleceu em Cesena. Aqui ele participou ativamente da expulsão do tirano Francesco Ordelaffi e assumiu o poder com o título de governador da cidade. Tendo se tornado cidadão de Cesena, mudou o sobrenome de Anguisciola para o de Aguselli, que deixou para seus descendentes. Com a sua morte deixou a família dividida em três ramos que se destacaram pelas suas virtudes civis e religiosas. Na época das facções em que os Agusellis se envolveram, Antonio e Orazio, condes de Linara, deixaram memória de si mesmos, dos quais o primeiro por ciúmes de mulheres caiu em uma intriga que lhe custou a vida, que lhe foi tirada por Camillo Buda em 11523 , o outro em 28 de fevereiro de 1584 foi atacado
