Antica famiglia, vanta un Cardinale di Sacra Romana Chiesa nella persona di Stefano Arcivescovo di Erachea nel 1681. Un Tommaso ebbe il titolo di Marchese d'Altemburgh. Famiglia illustre e storica allo stesso tempo, però come dice il Dolfi nella sua "Cronologia delle famiglie nobili di Bologna, con le loro insegne, e nel fine i cimieri", stampato in Bologna presso Giovan Battista Ferroni nel 1670, proveniente da Bologna. Qual fosse ne' passati secoli nelle Città dell'Emilia, la Famiglia è molto noto a ciascuno, ch'abbia de' fatti di quella nobil Città veruna contezza. Mentre non che gli huomini di questa Casa risedessero negli antichissimi tempi de' principali Magistrati della medesima, ma e con loro consiglio, e direzzione si riformasse più volte il publico reggimento di quella patria: La storia di questa illustre città è intimamente collegata a quella dell'intera Romagna.
