Família toscana muito antiga e nobre originária de Pistoia e espalhada ao longo dos séculos em várias regiões da Itália. As primeiras notícias da família Aiano remontam ao ano de 1376 (século XIV), quando um Signoretto Aiano di Ser Nuovo estava entre os priores da cidade de Pistoia. O comendador GB de Crollalanza relata o brasão desta família, nos volumes de seu "dicionário histórico de brasões de famílias nobres e notáveis italianas". Alguns escritores, mesmo de conceito não vulgar, que, tendo observado que famílias com o mesmo sobrenome, devido à antiga nobreza, florescem dispersas em diferentes cidades do mundo, se empenharam em fazê-los parecer todos derivados de um único tronco; o que acontece não conseguiram realizar com toda aquela clareza, que se poderia desejar na descrição da Genealogia desta Casa.
