Vi sono valide ragioni per ritenere che la casata, una delle più illustri famiglie della Toscana, siano un ramo degli Ubertini. Certo è che già prima del 1000 possedevano castelli intorno ad Arezzo, e si trova ricordata una donazione di terre fatta da Martino di Albergotto alla badia di S. Flora e Lucilla di quella citta'. Albergotto, figlio del detto Martino, nel 1089 fu fatto Senatore della Repubblica, e il di lui fratello. Ramundino, fu fatto cavaliere da Corradino, che egli accompagno' nel suo passaggio per Firenze. Trascurando personaggi di minore rilievo, troviamo nel 1311 Naldo di Beltramo, che fu uno dei deputati alla conclusione della pace fra Guelfi e Ghibellini, militando esso nel partito guelfo, e fu dalla sua citta' compensato col dono del cingolo militare e di una pensione. Giovanni, figlio di Naldo, fu abate cassinense e poi vescovo d'Arezzo: ed altri vescovi si trovano nelle generazioni successive
