There are valid reasons to believe that the family, one of the most illustrious families in Tuscany, is a branch of the Ubertini family. What is certain is that already before 1000 they owned castles around Arezzo, and a donation of land made by Martino di Albergotto to the abbey of S. Flora and Lucilla of that city is remembered.
