Antica famiglia di Benevento della quale si hanno notizie fin dal XII secolo. La tradizione dice che un Ruggiero prese parte alla battaglia di Benevento. Un ramo di questa famiglia che si stabilì in Napoli, e fu ascritto al Seggio di Porta, si estinse nel secolo XVII. Da Filippo II di Spagna venne concesso a Paolo il titolo di Marchese nel 1634; un Filippo fu vescovo di S. Agata dei Goti nel 1699; un Monsignor Nicola ebbe cariche altissime alla Corte di Roma, fu Arcivescovo di Atene e canonico di San Pietro nel 1739. Un ramo della nobile famiglia della Vipera di Benevento, si estinse negli Albino. La famiglia è iscritta genericamente nell'Elenco Uff. Nob. Ital. del 1922 col titolo di Patrizio di Benevento (mf.). La presenza del motto nella bibliografia documentata della famiglia ci conferma l'avita nobiltà raggiunta della casata. Infatti l'origine del motto risale a circa il XIV
