Originaria di Roselle, città distrutta presso Grosseto, è conosciuta questa famiglia fino dal secolo IX per un Ildeprando Conte. Insigniti dei titoli di Conti di Santa Fiora, di Pitigliano e Sovana, conti palatini. Di moltissima potenza e ricchezza, ebbe molta parte nelle civili discordie che al tempo dei Guelfi e Ghibellini (guelfi e ghibellini, fazioni politiche medievali, nate in Germania nel XII sec. e poi diffuse in Italia nei due secoli successivi. I nomi derivano da quello della casa tedesca dei Welfen (Guelfi), che sosteneva la casa di Baviera e di Sassonia nella lotta al trono imperiale contro i duchi di Svevia, ai quali apparteneva il castello di Weiblingen (italianizzato in Guaibelinga, da cui Ghibellini). I termini si diffusero in Italia al tempo di Federico II di Svevia, dopo anni di lotte tra le due casate, e vennero inizialmente a designare le due fazioni politiche dei sostenitori del papato
