Non occorre far discendere gli Aldovrandi dai Longobardi, come vuole la leggenda, per collocare questa casata fra le più antiche e cospicue bolognesi. Pare che in origine essi dimorassero a Castel de' Britti, e che poscia avessero abitazione in città, nella contrada del Vivaro o in quei pressi. La prima notizia certa che si ha di loro riguarda un Pietro, che con gli uomini d'Oliveto giurò il 9 gennaio 1175 di difendere quel castello a onore e salvezza della città di Bologna. Nel 1217 Ugolino figlio d'Ugo era uno dei procuratori, e nel 1257 Bonagrazia uno degli anziani consoli del Comune . Nicola di Pietro, che fu più volte ambasciatore della repubblica bolognese, podestà di Pisa e di Forlì, e uno dei capi della fazione maltraversa o aristocratica, insegnò gius civile dal 1831 al 1423; ma parecchi altri sono i lettori che questa famiglia ha dato al pubblico
