Ciro Aldrovandi patrizio bolognese nipote di Monsignor Pompeo che divenne poi Cardinale, fu conservatore di Roma nel 1728, e da Benedetto XIV venne compreso fra i nobili romani. La sua famiglia, di antichissima nobiltà bolognese diede vari Savi, Anziani, Senatori, Riformantori, Consiglieri. Un Iacopo degli Aldrovandi fu generale dei cavalieri guadenti nel 1439; Giovan Francesco senatore di Bologna e ambasciatore al Papa e al duca di Ferrara che lo armò cavaliere, fu anche Podestà di Lucca e di Firenze (1488). Carlo V, imperatore, concedette privilegi nobiliari e l'aquila imperiale ad Annibale Aldrovandi (1530): Giovanni senatore bolognese servì i Farnesi a Parma ed andò per essi ambasciatore al re di Spagna (1541). Ercole Aldrovandi nel 1586 fu creato conte di Guia dal duca di Ferrara Alfonso II. La famiglia degli Aldrovandi si alleò ai Pepoli, e ai Malatesta, ai Marescotti, agli Albergati, ai Grassi e ad altre famiglie di primaria nobiltà.
