Famille romaine antique et patricienne, déplacée vers le royaume de Sicile au XIVe siècle. Là, cette famille jouissait de la noblesse à Messine, Catane, à Piazza Armerina et à Nicosie. Le même fut également inscrit dans la noblesse d'Amalfi en 1650. Un Matthieu avait en effet confirmé par le roi Frédéric III de Sicile le fief de Nissuria. Son fils Antonino, docteur des deux lois, reçut du roi Martino, avec un privilège accordé à Catane le 4 novembre 1401, une saline à Marsala, qui passa en la personne de sa fille Luigia, épouse de Pietro de Afflitto. Un Matteo avait lié le fief de Nissuria par sa volonté par Rinaldo de Sano, qu'il avait confirmé par le roi Frédéric, mais qui plus tard, pour s'être rebellé contre les Martini, a perdu.
