The very noble Alfieri enjoyed the Florentine consular dignity and the other magistracies, before the establishment of popular government; but being followers of the Ghibelline party they were excluded from it and had to go out. Neri, expelled from Florence towards the end of the 13th century, retired to Padua, and some of his descendants later moved to Asti, in Piedmont. A branch that remained in Florence, humiliated by the reverses of fortune, had to enroll in the arts, and thus was able to give the homeland seventeen priors, the last of which was Francesco, in 1526.
