Antica ed assai nobile famiglia spagnola, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni di Spagna, d'Italia e del continente americano. Secondo quanto ci viene tramandato, la famiglia ha tratto il proprio nome dal toponimo Alìa, oggi comune nella comunità autonoma dell'Estremadura, provincia di Cáceres. Tuttavia si ritiene che già nel XIII secolo essa fosse passata a risiedere in Castiglia. Alcuni Alia fecero infatti parte delle truppe che accompagnarono Don Lope Díaz II de Haro nella campagna contro Sancho el Fuerte de Navarra. I riferimenti al casato si fanno più frequenti dal XV al XIX secolo, in particolare in relazione alla guerra di devoluzione (1667–1668), culminata con la firma della pace il 2 maggio 1668 ad Aquisgrana. Questo illustre casato si è anche imparentato con altre nobilissime famiglia spagnole. Si ricordi il matrimonio di Doña María de Alia y Valcárcel con Don Juan de Lorenzana.
