Antica famiglia greca, la quale, come giusta Vittorio Spreti, nella sua "Enciclpedia Storico nobiliare italiana", giunse in Calabria con un Eustachio, cavaliere dell'imperatore d'Oriente Basilio, con la carica di esarca. Proprio il detto Eustachio, secondo la tradizione, edificò il paese di Alimena, che poi diede il nome ai suoi discendenti; tuttavia, il paese venne distrutto da una scorreria di saraceni, al tempo di re Guglielmo II; riedificato da Altilio, governatore delle Calabrie, il paese venne detto "Altilia", mentre restò col nome di Alimena il fiume che scorre nelle vicinanze. In ogni modo, tal casato, il quale ha goduto nobiltà in Montalto, Sammartino, Cosenza ed Amantea, venne ricevuto per giustizia nell'ordine di Malta, nel 1589, e che fu decorato dei titoli di marchese, con anzianità dal 1624, e marchese di S. Martino, dal 1750, nel corso dei secoli, sempre riuscì a distinguersi, grazie agli elevati personaggi, a cui diede i natali.
