Vuolsi che questa famiglia discenda dalla gente Allia o Ellia del tempo della repubblica Romana, la quale, avendo avuto dei Zecchieri, impresse sulle monete il proprio nome. Si ànno memorie di Dazio signore di Angleria, e molto dopo degli A. signori di Candia in tempo di Costantino Imperatore. Da Milano andò a Pisa per discordie avute con le famiglie Lavelli ed Abaguzzani. Passò in Sicilia nel 1300 da Pisa, ove era una delle prime famiglie. Ha goduto nobiltà nelle città di Milano, Palermo, Pisa, Noto, ed in Grecia. Fu ricevuta nell'ordine di Malta nel 1530. Si veggono monumenti di essa in Palermo nelle chiese di S. Francesco, S. Maria di Gesù, di S. Francesco di Paola e dei Riformati. Ebbero molte Baronie tra le quali quelle di Castellamare del Golfo, Conforto, Corvitello ed altre.
