Antigua y muy noble familia del sur de Italia, conocida como Altamore o Altomare, de clara y ancestral virtud, repartida a lo largo de los siglos en diversas regiones de Italia. Sin embargo, según otras reconstrucciones heráldicas, la familia Altamore sería una rama colateral de la noble familia Altamura, que se cree que vino de Grecia y fue llevada a Roma por orden del emperador Justiniano II y luego se estableció en Puglia. En cualquier caso, la familia Altamore fue patricia en Salerno, desde el siglo X VI pero ramas de la misma vivieron noblemente por todo el sur de Italia. Por otra parte, esta familia, en el devenir de las décadas, siempre ha logrado producir una serie de hombres que han hecho célebre su nombre, en el empleo público, en las profesiones liberales, eclesiásticas y en el servicio militar.
