São de alta linhagem os deste apelido, pois descendem do Rei D. Ramiro II, de Leão, de quem foi quarto neto D. Hermígio Pais de Matos, senhor das quintas de Matos, Cardoso e Amaral, que por sua morte ficaram a cada um de seus filhos, cabendo a última a D. Afonso Henriques do A., que dela tirou o apelido. Esta quinta, o solar da família, fica no termo de Viseu. D. Afondo Henriques viveu no reinado de D. Sancho II, meteu-se na posse do souto de Lourosa, no termo da vila do Sul, como se provou nas inquirições ordenadas por D. Afonso III. De sua mulher, cujo nome se ignora, deixou geração, que continuou este apelido. Pedro Rodrigues do Amaral, a quem o Imperador de Constantinopla, André Peleólogo, fez cavaleiro com muitos privilégios e conde palatino, foi protonotário apostólico e admistrador de S. Pedro das Águias, e do mesmo soberano recebeu mercê de armas novas. O Imperador concedeu-as a 31-V-1491, o Papa Alexandre VI confirmou-as a 28-XI-1494 e o Rei D. Manuel I a 30-VIII-1503. Os Amarais de Touriz, lugar da freguesia da vila de Midões, aos quais pertenceu Frei André do Amaral, do conselho de D. Manuel I, chanceler-mor e embaixador da Ordem de Malta, comendador de Vera Cruz, etc., usaram outras armas, que lhes vinham por seu ascendente Domingos Joanes, de Oliveira do Hospital, as quais, posto que ele não fosse da linhagem dos Amarais, assim se encontram classificadas na Armaria Portuguesa, do erudito Anselmo Braamcamp Freire.
