Secondo il Mugnos famiglia nobile di Siena, da dove passò in Sicilia al tempo de' Guelfi e Ghibellini ( fazioni politiche medievali, nate in Germania nel XII sec. e poi diffuse in Italia nei due secoli successivi. I nomi derivano da quello della casa tedesca dei Welfen (Guelfi), che sosteneva la casa di Baviera e di Sassonia nella lotta al trono imperiale contro i duchi di Svevia, ai quali apparteneva il castello di Weiblingen (italianizzato in Guaibelinga, da cui Ghibellini). I termini si diffusero in Italia al tempo di Federico II di Svevia, dopo anni di lotte tra le due casate, e vennero inizialmente a designare le due fazioni politiche dei sostenitori del papato (guelfi) e dell'imperatore (ghibellini), distinzione molto spesso fittizia, a copertura di più ristretti interessi politici di singole famiglie all'interno dei vari comuni. Svanito il significato originario già alla fine del XIV sec., i due termini rimasero
