Très ancienne et illustre famille, dite Amato ou d'Amato, d'origine espagnole et arrivée en Sicile au XIIIe siècle, avec un certain Pagano qui, du roi Louis, obtint, avec privilège le 11 août 1296, le fief de Callisi, composé de trois propriétés foncières nommées Villanova, Cullasi et Xilinda, sur le territoire de Caltabellotta, qui sont restées dans la famille pendant de nombreuses générations. An Orlando était également propriétaire de la gabelle de Pelo et Merca de Palerme, à partir de l'investiture du 15 février 1458 ; tandis qu'un Giovanni fut le premier possesseur du fief de Galati, confirmé le 3 juillet 1453, et qui, avec privilège accordé le 9 juin et exécuté le 27 septembre 1644, en faveur de Filippo Amato, fut élevé au rang de principauté.
