Assai antica e chiara famiglia, detta Amato o d'Amato, la quale risulta oriunda della Spagna, giunta in Sicilia nel XIII secolo, con un certo Pagano che, da Re Ludovico, ottenne, con privilegio 11 agosto 1296, per i servigi prestati, il feudo di Callisi, consistente in tre tenimenti di terre nominate Villanova, Cullasi e Xilinda nel territorio di Caltabellotta, il quale rimase alla famiglia per moltissime generazione. Un Orlando fu anche possessore della gabella di Pelo e Merca di Palermo, come per investitura del 15 febbraro 1458; mentre un Giovanni fu il primo possessore del feudo di Galati, confermatogli il 3 luglio 1453, e che, con privilegio dato a 9 giugno ed esecutoriato a 27 settembre 1644, in favore di Filippo Amato, veniva innalzato in principato. Fu quest'ultimo senatore di Palermo, negli anni 1631-32, 1636-37, 1641-42 e capitano di giustizia della stessa città, nel 1643-44. Il detto Filippo, inoltre, comprò da

D'azzurro, alla banda d'oro, sostenente un leone illeopardito, guardante una cometa; la banda addestrata al terzo cantone da una stella, il tutto d' oro.
