Fin dalla prima metà del XIII secolo erano potenti in Firenze, e furono tra i principali del partito Guelfo che dovettero esulare nel 1260 dopo la disfatta di Monteaperti. Otto priori uscirono da questa famiglia tra il 1242 ed il 1417. Un Bardo, giudice e cavaliere, fu nel 1279 deputato ambasciatore al papa per invitarlo a farsi mediatore di pace nella città. Nuccio suo figlio fu nel 1329 destinato a presiedere alla difesa del castello di Montecatini, e nel 1332 dovè portarsi a Pistoia per ricevere il giuramento di fedeltà da quel Comune, che per due anni erasi accomandato alla repubblica fiorentina. Da uno de' suoi figli pretendeva discendere il celebre storico Scipione Ammirato, il quale per altro era nato da una famiglia di origine fiorentina, che da molti anni dimorava in Lecce. Altro ramo.
